Biography

**Professor Fabio Santanelli di Pompeo** was born in Naples. He is currently a Full Professor and the Director of the Chair of Plastic Surgery at the University of Rome “Sapienza,” Faculty of Medicine and Psychology, where he also leads the School of Specialization. Since 2003, he has been in charge of the Plastic Surgery Unit at Sant’Andrea Hospital in Rome.

He earned his degree in Medicine and Surgery in 1984 at the age of 23 and obtained his license to practice medicine from the University of Naples. From 1987 to 1990, he enhanced his studies with clinical fellowships in “Breast Surgery,” “Cleft Lip and Palate,” “Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery,” and “Reconstructive Microsurgery” at Sahlgrenska Hospital, University of Gothenburg, Sweden. In 1989, he specialized in Plastic Surgery at the University of Naples, Federico II. In 1994, he completed his PhD in Plastic Surgery at the University of Rome La Sapienza, and in 1999, he obtained his license to practice and specialization in Plastic Surgery in Sweden.

Throughout his career from 1988 to 2014, he has visited numerous international institutions as a visiting physician, including Akademiska Sjukhuset University of Uppsala, Karolinska Hospital and Sabbatsberg Hospital University of Stockholm, University of Modena, University of Catania, University of Berlin, Sahlgrenska Hospital University of Gothenburg, Mount Vernon Hospital University of London, Hopital Necker and Clinic Bizet, University of Paris, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital University of Taipei, Center for Microsurgical Breast Reconstruction University of New York, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital Harvard Medical School.

His primary interest has been Reconstructive Microsurgery, particularly breast reconstruction using the DIEP flap and Latissimus Dorsi. His extensive work in this field led to the initiation of a Level II University Master’s course in “Breast Reconstruction” in 2007, and since 2009, the “Clinical and Experimental Reconstructive Microsurgery” Fellowship at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Ministry of Health, in Rome.

In recent years, he has focused on studying Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma and facial allotransplants, in cooperation with the Italian Ministry of Health. His commitment and contributions to scientific research in Plastic Surgery have earned him numerous national and international recognitions, leading to his appointment as Secretary General of the European Association of Plastic Surgeons (EURAPS) from 2014 to 2021 and as President in 2023/24.

He was recently awarded the title of Honorary Professor in Plastic Surgery at the University of Novi Sad, Serbia, Honorary Member of the Serbian Society of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, and Honorary Member of the Swedish Society of Plastic Surgery.

His scientific work has produced 188 original papers and 35 book chapters.
