Biography

Prof. Fabio Santanelli di Pompeo was born in Naples, currently he is Full Professor and holds the Chair of Plastic Surgery at Sapienza, University of Rome, where he runs the university program for the Board in Plastic Surgery, and from 2003 is Head of Plastic Surgery Unit at Sant’Andrea Hospital.

He started his training on 1984 at University of Naples, where at the age of 23 years, he obtained the Medical Doctor Degree, and qualified as Medical Practitioner in Italy. Later hecontinued from 1987 to 1990 at University of Göteborg, Sweden, where he completed his clinical Fellowships in “cleft lip and palate”, “cranio-maxillofacial surgery”, “breast surgery” and “reconstructive microsurgery”. On 1989 he achieved the Italian and on 1990 the Swedish Board in Plastic Surgery. On 1994 he completed the Ph.D. program in Plastic Surgery, at University of Rome La Sapienza, and in 1999 he qualified as Medical Practitioner and Specialist in Plastic Surgery, in Sweden.

During his professional life from 1988 to 2014, he attended many international institutions to improve his knowledge and skill,as the Akademiska Sjukhuset University of Uppsala, Karolinska Hospital and Sabbatsberg Hospital University of Stockholm, University of Modena, University of Catania, University of Berlin, Sahlgrenska Hospital University of Göteborg, Mount Vernon Hospital University of London, Hopital Necker and Clinic Bizet, University of Paris, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital University Taipei, Center for Microsurgical Breast Reconstruction New York University Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital Harvard Medical School.

His main interest has been in Reconstructive Microsurgery, specially focusing on breast reconstruction with DIEP flap and Latissimus Dorsi flap procedures. The intense activity in this field led him to start and chair, since 2007 a University Master Course on Breast Reconstruction, at Sapienza University of Rome, and from 2009 a Fellowship on Clinical and Experimental Reconstructive Microsurgery at the Superior Institute of Health, Ministry of Health, in Rome.

Over the last years, he has been focusing on the study of Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma, and Face Allo-Trasplantation in cooperation with the Italian Ministry of Health. The commitment and contribution to the scientific research in plastic surgery brought national and international recognition, with the consequent appointment as Secretary General of the European Association of Plastic Surgeons (EURAPS), since May 2014.

Recently he was awarded with Honorary Professorship in Plastic Surgery at University of Novi Sad, Serbia, and Honorary Member of the Serbian Society of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.

His scientific effort produced 159 original papers and 35 book chapters.
